Learning in the Community, co-ordinated by the CWU
11 August 2010
Midlands CWU learning rep Steve Hackford and one of his learners, Balraj Singh Atwal, have set up a learning centre in the Sikh temple in Wolverhampton to help the local community improve their English, maths and IT skills. Steve had already helped around 700 colleagues through courses at the Wolverhampton Mail Centre when he had the idea to open something similar in the Guru Nanak Sikh Temple in Cannock, where Atwal has been President for the past 23 years. “Atwal had been coming to one of my courses last year but then couldn’t attend any more, and we got talking about the temple and I asked if there were any facilities there where we could set something up,” Steve recalls.
Midlands Community Learning Update
23 November 2009
Community learning continues to grow in the Midlands as the CWU seek to build a wider presence. The Port Vale learning centre was officially opened by Billy Hayes in July. Additionally, the Mid No 7 Branch signed a learning agreement with Unite and Port Vale FC on this day. The Wolverhampton AMAL branches, headed by ULR Steve Hackford, continue to support the Sikh Temple learning centre. This quarter has seen over 150 learners attending courses such as, wrestling, music, cookery, IT, numeracy and literacy. Finally, congratulations to Paul Malyan Community ULR in getting the first course up and running at the Wallace Sports and Education Centre in Stoke. Furthermore, October will see the ‘Festival of Learning’ a week of informal learning events, consisting of beginners Salsa, Spanish, French, drama and music workshops. Culminating in a grand show performance at the end of the week. Over a £1000 funding has been sourced from Unionlearn to run the events at the Wallace Centre.

CWU Learn to Organise
09 November 2009
The CWU have been able to establish a presence at Vodafone in Newcastle under Lyme Staffs which employs 1400 people through the Learning and Education program. Andrew Cawley and Dave Condliffe the Midlands Regional Project Worker attended a Meeting with Vodafone HR to agree a structure to provide Information, Advice and Guidance to those 200 workers who were facing compulsory redundancy from the company. It was agreed that the CWU would facilitate a series of IAG interview sessions with the workers who had been identified as facing redundancy at the Newcastle under Lyme sites to deliver Information, Advice and Guidance to those workers who were facing uncertain futures.
